Widmer Brotheres Reserve Barrel Aged Brrrbon (Fall 2010)

Our local Albertson's is either great at getting aged beers or terrible at rotating their stock.  We found this 2010 just sitting on the shelf the other day, asking to be bought.  After buying a few aged beers there we at least know they store at a decent temperature and typically don't ruin them.  Anyway, it was pre-aged for us!

The beer was surprisingly smooth, especially considering the ABV.  I typically am not a fan of the winter ales, but this one was pretty good.  I can imagine if it hadn't been aged it would be a bit rough, but a few years made it delicious.  I'd consider picking up a 2012, but not drinking it for a few years.

Widmer Brother Marionberry Hibiscus Gose

This was my first time trying a Gose, so it's hard to compare within the style.  I didn't taste the saltiness and it was not as tart as I expected for the style.  I could definitely taste the marionberry and hibiscus.  It poured bright pink (much more than the picture looks).  It was ok, but I don't think I'd pick it up again.

Widmer Brothers Lemongrass Wheat Ale

You can definitely taste the lemongrass in this beer.  However, if you're not a wheat ale fan this beer will not be for you.  This would be a perfect beer for a summer BBQ.

The husband loves lemongrass and loved the smell of this beer, but didn't think the lemongrass and wheat ale pairing was very good.

Widmer Brothers Raspberry Stout

This beer was quite delicious.  There was a definite raspberry flavor without overpowering the rest of the beer. The stout came out for sure in this beer.  Even the hubby thought this was a nice blend.

Widmer Brothers Hefeweizen

Widmer is one of those breweries that I think is somewhere between mainstream beer and craft beer.  It's popular and all over the place.  Maybe that's only in the PNW, but to me, I see it everywhere.  This Hefeweizen is really lacking in flavor to me.

This beer would make a good entry into trying something like a Hefeweizen if you had never had one before, but if you're a frequent beer drinker, this probably isn't for you.  It's drinkable and was only in the fridge because a friend was visiting and it's her beer of choice.  It will probably, however, remain there for a while until other people come over and drink it.

Beer Advocate agrees that it's pretty average.
Here's Widmer's info on this beer!
